The Role of an Occupational Therapist

Occupational therapists (OTs) work with people with mentally, physically, developmentally, or emotionally disabling conditions to improve their ability to function effectively in living and working environments. Their role is to help their patients lead independent and productive lives by improving their basic motor functions and reasoning abilities, as well as find solutions to deal with permanent loss of function.

They help them regain their abilities to perform their routine activities independently. This may include grooming, cooking, dressing, work activities, play, leisure or even educational activities. They have to take care of the sensory motor, cognitive and psychological aspects of the patient. It is the responsibility of the occupational therapist to provide their patients’ caregivers and family members the guidance and recommendations necessary for patient care.
