The Causes of Cellulite – What You Need to Know

Cellulite is a problem for many women, and so many of us are desperate to understand the causes of cellulite and how it can best be avoided. Unfortunately cellulite isn’t always that simple!

Cellulite is fat that appears dimpled through the skin, seen on the hips, buttocks, thighs and other areas. It ranges in severity, and is sometimes described as ‘orange peel’ or ‘cottage cheese’ in texture.

There are no definitive causes of cellulite. Some people may believe that it’s a problem for overweight women, but it can happen to women of any size.

Technically, cellulite occurs due to the fibrous connective cords that are responsible for connecting the skin to the muscle underneath.

Fat lies in between these cords, and sometimes these fat cells can push up against the skin at the same time as the cords pull down. This is what causes the uneven, dimpled surface.

Why Are Some People More Prone to Cellulite Than Others?

Whilst cellulite causes are simply down to the ways in which our body stores fat, there are certain factors that can determine whether we are more likely to suffer from cellulite:

* Heredity can play a role,
* Your natural skin thickness can make a difference,
* Women are more likely to develop cellulite than men,
* Your age can also make a difference.

Gaining weight can make cellulite more visible, so sticking to a healthy diet and keeping up a level of physical activity may help to keep your skin looking smooth.

These measures are useful for maintaining a firm skin tone, but cellulite is simply a fact of life for some people. Don’t feel down about it – around eight out of ten women will have it in some form!

As you can see, the causes of cellulite are down to simple biology. Cellulite is not dangerous, it is simply a natural process within our body.
