There are many different online dating websites cropping up every day, which makes it even easier to make friends and find love without ever leaving the comfort of your home.
When joining an online dating website you can create a profile and browse other members profiles to find suitable matches for yourself. Online dating is an extremely fun and enjoyable way of meeting new people and maybe even finding Mr or Mrs right.
However, when looking for love online it’s easy to let your guard down and risk your safety. With that in mind, here is some advice and tips to help you stay safe online.
When I say “choose wisely”, not only do I mean choose the people you speak to wisely, but also the online dating site you use. Pick one that has been around for a while and has a good reputation. Look around online for online dating site reviews to make sure the website you sign up for is a safe one.
Never Give Out Personal Information
When talking to people online you should never give them your personal information – no matter how well you think you know them. Keep details such as your address, place of work, and bank details, to yourself. There are many people online that are out to deceive you and some even pretend to be someone they aren’t.
Trust Your Instincts
If something or someone doesn’t feel right then trust your own instincts. After a while of being in the online dating game you will begin to get a feel of who is genuine and who isn’t. If you suspect someone is lying to you or deceiving you in any way then drop them and move on.
Don’t be Scared of the Report Button
If someone is harassing you or you feel at all uncomfortable with anyone on an online dating website then you should report them immediately. Many dating sites have a reporting function where you will be able to tell an admin of the site about your problem. Don’t be afraid of feeling silly about reporting someone or something you aren’t comfortable with.
Use Common Sense
It can be easy to fall in love online especially if you are at a point in your life when you are actively looking for it. But before you fall head over heels you should use your common sense and take things a bit more slowly. Start to get to know each other by emails or private messages first. Then when you start to feel more comfortable you can start chatting by phone.
Be Cautious When Meeting
It can be exciting to meet your potential partner for the first time face to face – but you must be cautious. At first always meet up in a public place such as a restaurant or a bar. You should also tell your friends and family where you will be going and stick to that place.
Always remember online dating is supposed to be fun. If you do not take the above precautions then it could turn into a nightmare!
