A video released today covers something that many of us may overlook or take for granted, but is very important, if not crucial: senior safety and healthy living in the home. Knowing and incorporating some every day basic home safety tips for seniors to live a long and healthy life is what’s discussed in the latest “Meet the Experts” video short. VNA Hospice & Palliative Care of Southern California (http://www.vnasocal.org) announces this second in a series of video lectures derived from their monthly “Meet the Experts” community meetings.

Starla Howard, R.P.T., Rehabilitation Supervisor at VNA Hospice & Palliative Care of Southern California, is featured in this video offering her expertise for seniors to remain safe in the home and live a healthy lifestyle. Just some of the keys to living a healthy lifestyle noted in the video are to eat properly, stay hydrated, take medications as prescribed, practice proper hand washing and getting the appropriate immunizations. “Hand washing may seem simple and basic, but 60 percent of all people, not just seniors, do not wash their hands often enough, and 90 percent do not wash their hands properly,” Howard tells us in the video. She uses the example of using an electronic pen to sign for something at a grocery store, saying “how many people have touched that pen?” She also says it’s very important not to lose the ability to stand on one leg. To expand on this, see the video.

For in-home safety, here is just a portion of the tips she offers:

  • Practice fall recovery. What if you fall in the bathroom? The kitchen?
  • Secure your throw rugs in your house.
  • Keep pathways clear/safe.
  • Make sure you are not using your towel rack as a grab bar.

“Meet the Experts” provides community access to specialists in the care of patients with chronic, advanced or terminal diseases who need hospice or home care support. Many people with advanced diseases are able to remain for quite some time on their own outside of a formal care setting. Often family members provide the first line of support in this situation. Community education connects those who want to know a complete set of care options with experts who study and provide that care and stay in tune with the latest developments in advanced disease options. The videos contain not only the public presentations but follow-up one-on-one interviews.
