Eye Care Tips and Exercises for Desktop Publishers

Desktop publishers take heed of these natural eye care tips. Just like any other muscle or brain cell for that matter, your eyes need to be exercised and taken care of properly to remain sharp and avoid trouble down the line. As with any other preventative maintenance program for your body before it inevitably becomes a cadaver, eating right and maintaining a healthy lifestyle is of paramount importance. That screen you’re looking at can cause eye strain, blurred vision, and headaches but there are some great tricks and techniques provided below to help you protect your eyes.

Exercises for your Eyes

  • First off, look away from your computer every twenty minutes and focus on something off in the distance that is easy to see and causes no strain whatsoever.
  • Every so often, close your eyes gently, take a few deep breaths and focus your attention on envisioning every compont of your eyes and relaxing that part more and more as you progress.
  • Make sure you have adequate lighting and avoid having excessive glare on your screen in your work area.
  • Scan the room picking out objects and shifting your focus in a fluid manner.
  • Your monitor should be positioned pretty close to eye level.
  • Focus on your upheld thumb and then something well in the distance and repeat this focus switching for about 20 times.
  • Be cognizant of your expression when staring at your computer screen to make sure it's relaxed and not scrunched or squinting. You're desk probably isn't situated in the middle of a desert so there’s no need to stare down your computer monitor like you’re Clint Eastwood.
  • Visualizing scenes and landscapes that put you in a good mood when you close your eyes is also good for your eyes and well being.
  • I like hiking at night in bear country, it just connects me to some sixth sense primal instincts as well as emphasizing the need for keen eyesight that has been diluted by way too many generations of desk jockeying. A great way to sharpen your night eyes is to pick an object you can barely make out in the dark like a rock or a stump and then look off at a 45 degree angle using your periphery vision to get a better picture of that object. We humans had hunter’s eyes up until the last century or so. As a species, we used to easily spot the flicker of deer’s ear well off in the distance behind dense foliage because we needed that skill to survive. Obviously technology has evolved in such a way that the vast majority of the things we now predominantly look at are within a few feet.
