Social Eating And Traveling Tips

It’s one thing to stick with your diet regimen when you’re at home, in control of the contents of your refrigerator and your portion sizes. But what about going out to dinner with friends? Worse, how do you stay on track when your dream vacation has you seated by the dessert cart at every meal?

Eating right when you’re out of your comfort zone can actually be easier than when you are at home, so long as you think smart and plan ahead. Getting in shape can be an arduous journey, and you should allow yourself to celebrate along the way! However, celebrating doesn’t mean two helpings of dessert.

Instead, focus on these simple tips to help you enjoy your dinners out on the town without compromising your weight loss goals.

Daily Plan

Incorporate meals out like any others. Don’t skip meals beforehand, setting yourself up to be starving, then overeat. Plan. Don’t be afraid to call ahead and find out what the specials are going to be and figure out a couple of choices, so that you don’t stress out when you arrive and order foods that are not the best options for your diet.

If the restaurant or event is going to serve you buffet-style, again, call ahead to plan. If that’s not an option, here are a couple ideas. First, ask someone with whom you’re comfortable sharing your dietary concerns to help you. Tell him or her what foods you can eat (or what you cannot eat) and ask the person to fill a plate for you. Or second, walk up to the buffet table(s) beforehand with no plate. Just take a casual stroll around and see which foods are being served.

Then decide if you would like to ask someone else to place your selections on a plate for you or if you would prefer to get them yourself.

Slow and Steady

First of all, use manners and eat slowly. Not only will this help with your digestion, it slows your eating down so that you don’t “gulp” and be a chow-hound, eating everything in sight.

If out with others, remember you are also there for socializing, so talk between bites. Set your eating utensils down while you chew. Have a sip of water between bites. The goal is not to see how fast can you wolf down the food while someone else is talking.

Have fun along the way

Food has become our society’s way of bringing people together, bonding friends, and building relationships. Unfortunately, for those of us looking to cut back on what and how much we eat, this can make previously enjoyable dinner dates to be dreaded and avoided tasks.

It doesn’t have to be this way. Remember why you’ve been invited out in the first place: to enjoy the company of others. You do not need certain amounts of food or certain types of food to accomplish this. Still go out, but help choose a place with foods you can eat. For example, opt for a restaurant with salads and low-fat menu choices instead of a place with all deep-fried batter-dipped menu choices and heavy desserts.

The worst thing you can do for your self-confidence is to shut yourself off from your circle of family and friends, or to stay shut in the house all the time. After all, when you do meet your weight loss goal, you still want friends around to enjoy it with!

Strength in numbers

If you’re nervous about your willpower, go through a couple of trial runs with other friends who are watching what they eat. In this case, peer pressure can be a positive thing, as you all encourage one another to make healthy meal decisions.

Avoid the urge to compete with one another to see who can drink the most water and eat only shredded lettuce leaves. Instead, choose an old favorite and split it with a partner.

This way, you won’t feel deprived and your portion size will automatically be limited. Not only will your waistlines be smaller, but so will your bills!

Healthy Recipe

GRILLED TURKEY TENDERLOIN

1/4 c. low-sodium soy sauce
1/4 c. sherry wine or apple juice
1/8 tsp. black pepper
2 tbsp. crushed onion
1 lb. uncooked turkey tenderloin, 3/4 to 1 inch thick
1/4 c. peanut oil
2 tbsp. lemon juice
1/8 tsp. garlic salt
1/4 tsp. ground ginger

In a shallow pan, blend all marinade ingredients together. Add turkey, turning to coat both sides.
Cover; marinate in refrigerator several hours or overnight, turning occasionally.
Grill the tenderloins over hot coals, 8-10 minutes per side, depending on the thickness.
Tenderloins are done when there is no pink in the center - do not over cook.
Serve in 1/4 inch thick slices in toasted buns. Yields 4 servings.

Natural Beauty recipe

Orient Nights Perfume

Ingredients:
4 drops sandalwood
4 drops musk
3 drops frankincense
2 teaspoons jojoba oil
Directions:
Mix all the ingredients together, shake well.
Then allow the perfume to settle for at least 12 hours.
Store in a cool dry area.

Whispering Rain Perfume

Ingredients:
2 cups distilled water
3 tablespoons vodka
5 drops sandalwood essential oil
10 drops bergamot essential oil
10 drops cassis essential oil
Directions:
Mix all the ingredients together, shake well.
Then allow the perfume to settle for at least 12 hours.
Store in a cool dry area.

Falling Stars Perfume

Ingredients:
2 cups distilled water
3 tablespoons vodka
5 drops lavender essential oil
10 drops chamomile essential oil
10 drops valerian essential oil
Directions:
Mix all the ingredients together, shake well.
Then allow the perfume to settle for at least 12 hours.
Store in a cool dry area

Daily Low Fat - Low Carb - Vegetarian Recipes

HEALTH COOKIES

1 c. raisins
1/2 c. chopped dates
1/2 c. chopped apples
1 c. water
1/2 c. vegetable shortening
2 well beaten eggs
2 tsp. artificial sweetener (such as sweet n low)
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. flour
3/4 c. chopped nuts

Boil raisins, dates, and apples in water for 3 minutes.
Add shortening to melt, then cool and add rest of ingredients with the nuts last. Mix well.
Drop by teaspoons onto cookie sheet.
Bake at 350 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes.
Store in refrigerator in an airtight container.

Nutritional Supplementation: Due to a variety of factors, including the stress of daily life, environmental pollution, and the diminished trace mineral content in the soil in which our foods are grown, for most people a healthy diet alone is not enough to ensure health.

For this reason, holistic physicians often recommend nutritional supplements as part of a daily health regimen. Once again, biochemical individuality plays a role in determining the proper dosages.

Every person requires the same nutrients for proper physiological functioning. The amount of each nutrient needed by each of us varies greatly, however, due to such considerations as genetic predisposition, stress level, the environments in which we live and work, and our type of lifestyle (active or sedentary).

People who smoke, drink alcohol, or suffer from illness or allergies all have higher nutritional needs, as well, as do pregnant women. Therefore, to get the best results from nutritional supplementation, it is advisable that you consult with a nutritionally-oriented health practitioner.

In the meantime, the table below, created by Robert Ivker, D.O. past-president of the American Holistic Medical Association, and Robert Anderson, M.D., founding president of the American Board of Holistic Medicine, provides a suggested dosage range for the most common antioxidant vitamins and minerals that most people can use as part of their daily routine for maintaining their health.

Vitamin C (as polyascorbate) -- 1,000 to 2,000 mg 3 times per day
Beta-carotene -- 25,000 IU 1 to 2 times per day
Vitamin E -- 400 IU 1 to 2 times per day
B-complex vitamins -- 50 to 100 mg of each B vitamin per day
Folic acid -- 400 to 800 mcg per day
Selenium -- 100 to 200 mcg per day
Zinc picolinate -- 20 to 40 mg per day
Calcium citrate or apatite -- 1,000 mg per day
Magnesium citrate or aspartate -- 500 mg per day
Chromium polynicotinate (ChromeMate(R)) -- 200 mcg per day
Manganese -- 10 to 15 mg per day
Copper -- 2 mg per day
Iron -- 10 to 18 mg per day.

"People who are exposed to higher levels of stress and increased exposure to pollutants, or who are not feeling well or experiencing diminished sleep, should use the higher doses," Dr. Ivker advises.

"Otherwise, take at least the minimum dose of each nutrient every day, preferably with your meals." A number of formulas on the market contain all of these ingredients, making it easier to adopt such a program.

Dr. Ivker also recommends that people daily take one or two tablespoons of flaxseed oil, either on salads or mixed with an equal amount of low-fat cottage cheese, in order to receive a good supply of essential fatty acids, particularly omega-3 fatty acids.

Some good life philosophies

* Accept that some days you're the pigeon, and some days you're the statue.

* Always keep your words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat them.

* Always read stuff that will make you look good if you die in the middle of it.

* Drive carefully. It's not only cars that can be recalled by their maker.

* If you can't be kind, at least have the decency to be vague.

* If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

* It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

* Never put both feet in your mouth at the same time, because then you won't have a leg to stand on.

* Nobody cares if you can't dance well. Just get up and dance.

* Since it's the early worm that gets eaten by the bird, sleep late.

* The second mouse gets the cheese.

* When everything's coming your way, you're in the wrong lane.

* Birthdays are good for you. The more you have, the longer you live.

* We could learn a lot from crayons. Some are sharp, some are pretty and some are dull. Some have weird names, and all are different colors, but they all have to live in the same box.
