If you have a child of 6 to 8 years old that wantsto start exercising and lifting weights, you mayfind yourself wondering what you should do. Whilesome think it is perfectly fine for children to exercise, there are others that think differently.

The long and short of it is that yes, it is beneficial for your child to partake in exercise or a weight training regimen although there are afew things that you should keep in mind once thisstarts to happen.

Children and Exercise....no matter how you look at it, children aren't miniature adults and therefore you can't use thesame methods with growing children that you can usewith adults, as children are different from adultsemotionally, anatomically, and physiologically.

All children have immature skeletons, as their bones don't mature until they get 14 - 22 years ofage. With girls, exercise during childhood canhave very critical effects on bone health that can last for their entire lives.

Children and Exercise....children are often times vulnerable to growthrelated overuse injuries such as Osgood schlatterdisease. Children have immature temperature regulation systems due to their having a largesurface area compared to their muscle mass whichwill cause them to be more susceptible to injurywhen they aren't properly warmed up.

Children don't sweat as much as adults do, so they will be more susceptible to heat exhaustionas well as a heat stroke. Due to their low musclemass and immature hormone system, it makes itharder for them to develop strength and speed.Their breathing and heart response during exercise are also different from an adults, whichwill affect their capacity for exercise.

Children and Exercise....on the other hand, young boys and girls can drastically improve their strength with weighttraining although opposed to adults, neurologicalfactors instead of muscle growth factors are mostlyresponsible.

When you consider programs for children, first andforemost you should obtain a medical clearance. The first approach to designing a program is toestablish a repetition range of 8 - 12 and keepthe work load appropriate for the range.

You should ensure that workouts are spread outenough to have at least 1 - 2 full days of restbetween workouts. The main focus when working outshould be on the form of every exercise performed, and not on the amount of weight being lifted.

Children and Exercise....before weight training, warm up and stretchingshould be done. Start your children off with lightloads and then make adjustments accordingly. Nomore than 3 non consecutive exercise sessionsshould be done in a week. You should also see toit that they drink plenty of water before, during, and after exercise. Getting enough water is veryimportant with exercise, as it is often times veryeasy to get dehydrated - especially with children.

Exercise And Play

Children and Exercise....often times, when children return from playing, theylook quite exhausted and ready for a nap. This isthe most accurate description, and also quite thetruth, as playing is hard work. It's exhausting tothe mind and body of the child, and it plays animportant role in helping them to become productiveand healthy.

The role of play and exercise in the life of a youngchild will provide them with several benefits. Exercise of the body is a very important part ofkeeping the young body fit as it grows into an adultbody. Once we reach adulthood, if we've had the benefit of exercise and play, we all tend to continue that habit well into our adult years.

Play is also good in the form of participating inorganized sports, coordinated play times, and beinga member of a large group during all of these typesof activities. Playing on this level will teachus how to interact with peers and perform as a team with our fellow players. In today's businessworld, these skills are essential.

What we learn in body language, coping skills, andthe interaction of the mind and body during ourinteraction with others is invaluable. When welearn this skills to the fullest, not only will we learn how to get along with others, but we willalso learn how to interact better with ourselves.

Although interacting with ourselves seems likea rather pointless exercise, it is actually animportant part of maintaining the best sense ofhealth and wellness. There will always be timeswhen our bodies are trying to tell us thingsabout our physical or mental condition, which wewill simply refuse to listen to.

Through exercise and play, we will also learnwhat our limitations are - both physical andmental. At times of play, you'll see childrenand young adults push themselves to their limitand beyond. As children, we are all more ableto distinguish between a real limit versus whatsociety itself calls our limits.

Children and Exercise....for children and young adults, the pressures ofthe world don't affect them near as much as it does adults. Children have a much better state ofmind and peace, unlike adults that have let the outside influence the body and mind, which willdo little more than becoming a dominant factor oftime.

As you can tell, the benefits that are gained fromexercise and play time as children, will benefitus for the rest of our lives. As adults, we alltoo often forget how important both exercise andplay are.

Children and Exercise....normally, we want to rush children into their daily responsibilities, forgetting that at theirage they need play and interaction for their youngminds.
